Chairman of a community arrested for defiling a 12- year old

The Delta State Police Command has arrested the chairman of Oguname Street, Agbarho community, in the Ughelli North Local Government Area of the state for the alleged defilement of a 12-year-old girl.
City Round gathered that the suspect, identified simply as Israel, defiled the victim at gunpoint on Valentine’s Day on Monday at an undisclosed location within the community.
It was learnt that local security guards, who caught the suspect in the act, had turned down a N20,000 bribe offered to them by the suspect to evade arrest.
The guards consequently dragged him to the community hall “for necessary disciplinary sanctions.”
However, some members of the community were said to be making efforts to cover up the incident, alleging that the victim consented.
It has been reported that the victim was offered money in exchange for sex, adding that the matter had already been reported to the police.
Also, the victim’s father was said to have resolved not to pursue the case for fear of stigmatisation.
When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Bright Edafe, said the suspect had been arrested, and he confessed to the offence.
He said, “The matter was reported but not by the principal victim and not by anybody that was there to represent her. For the fact that the matter was reported, the suspect was arrested and he admitted to committing the offence.
“But the fact is that without an official complaint from the victim, there is nothing anybody can do about that matter because you cannot charge the suspect to court when there is no victim, no medical report. Nothing. That is the challenge.”
