Criminology (from Latin crīmen, “accusation” originally derived from the Ancient Greek verb “krino” “κρίνω”, and Ancient Greek -λογία, -logy|-logia, from “logos” meaning: “word,” “reason,” or “plan”), is the scientific study of the nature, extent, management, causes, control, consequences, and prevention of criminal behavior, both on the individual and social levels. Criminology is an interdisciplinary field in both the behavioral and social sciences, drawing especially upon the research of sociologists, psychologists, philosophers, psychiatrists, social anthropologists, as well as scholars of law.
As the name suggests, Criminology is directly referring to the crime. Forensic science is only the part of criminology. It is one of the challenging fields as the crime is increasing day by day in various countries. Criminology develops theories for explaining crime as a social phenomenon.
A criminologist’s job responsibilities involve analyzing data to determine why the crime was committed and to find ways to predict and prevent further criminal behavior.
