Manchester United secured their first trophy under manager Erik ten Hag, winning the Carabao Cup final against Newcastle United 2-0 on Sunday. The Red Devils’ victory was not only a significant achievement for the club but also earned them a meager prize money of just £100,000.

The match saw United take an early lead through Brazilian midfielder Casemiro, who found the net in the 17th minute. Marcus Rashford doubled their lead just before halftime with a brilliant goal, which ultimately proved to be the winning strike.

Although it was United’s first silverware since 2017, the prize money received by the team was not as significant as one might expect. Newcastle United, who were the runners-up, received only half of United’s prize money, earning £50,000.

However, the clubs were able to split the gate receipts from the match, which saw 87,306 fans in attendance at Wembley Stadium. It is estimated that the gate receipts could be a considerable sum, given the match’s popularity and the high turnout.

Meanwhile, Nottingham Forest and Southampton, who lost in the semi-finals, received a consolation prize of £25,000 each. Unfortunately, all the other participants, including the four beaten quarter-finalists, failed to earn any prize money from the Carabao Cup.

The Carabao Cup has been a competition where many smaller clubs have made their mark, with unexpected upsets and shocking results in the past. However, the competition’s prize money distribution has been criticized by some, with smaller clubs receiving much less compared to their bigger counterparts.

Overall, Manchester United will be happy to have won their first trophy under the Dutch manager, even though the prize money they received was not as significant. The victory will provide a much-needed boost to the team’s morale, and they will now look to build on this success in the remaining games of the season.
