Can Liverpool win the Champions League this season?

There is nothing like a Champions League night and for a club like Liverpool who have continually made history in that competition, a night like that on the road, does a lot to boost confidence and ego especially after a 1-0 loss in the premier league to Nottingham Forest.

Tuesday night was all about glory and redemption for Liverpool who as cliché as it may sound now, engineered a comeback against AC Milan to salvage a 3-1 win at the San Siro.

It was a thrilling night by all accounts, and the Reds were in dominant form after going 1-0 down within the first 3-minutes to a Christian Pulisic goal. The 3-1 eventual score line was a jest of what the actual performance was as Liverpool’s main man, Mohamed Salah came close to scoring twice but had the bar as his real threat on the night.

Liverpool lose at Anfield: Is the Slot honeymoon over?

The game fair play to the AC Milan teams of old, showed how far the Rossoneri are to being back in the European spotlight, which raises the question; were Liverpool really tested? And more importantly, can Liverpool be considered as one of the teams that could challenge the best for glory at the final in May 2025?

It is interesting to see what Arne Slot and his team cook up as they move along in the Champions League league-phases. However, one thing is clear—Liverpool are still defensively vulnerable when on the attack.

For a team who hopes to challenge the best; the best attacks, the best defence and the best midfields, vulnerability in any position can come back to haunt them, especially when opponents know exactly when to get in behind them.

Of course, the Liverpool backline did well to come through for the team after going 1-0 down as its back 4 of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate and Kostas Tsimikas combined to hand the Reds the equalizer and the lead shortly before half-time, but the manner of which Christian Pulisic puts to question Liverpool’s capabilities in going farther in the Champions League.

Chances are that the Reds just like the 0-1 defeat to Nottingham Forest, can meet up a very defensively astute team and find their night made more difficult after going down by a 1-0 deficit.

Speaking of defence, Liverpool’s attack so far has been somewhat on the fringes in terms of goal contributions, with only Mohamed Salah, Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota getting on the score sheet so far. If the Reds are to go far in the league-phases of the Champions League, they will need other names to turn up with the numbers as Tuesday night showed it wasn’t Diogo Jota or Mohamed Salah’s day to get the numbers.

Thus, the question asks itself again; can Liverpool win the Champions League this season?

Off record, there is a possibility, considering they are far from being the worst team in the tournament. But on record, there are still much better lineups that can steal big old ears away from the Reds.
