The Federal Government has reacted to a footage of Indonesian security operatives brutally attacking a Nigerian Diplomatic official.

Topnaija reports that on Saturday, August 7, the official identified as Ibrahim was nabbed by the police outside a supermarket in Jakarta, Indonesia and asked to produce his identity card, which he was unavailable at that moment.

He, however, explained that he was working as an officer of the Nigerian High Commission and Consulate in Indonesia. The security agents did not buy his explanation and quickly arrested him.

They forced him into the vehicle and from the footage, one of the officers held him tightly on the neck. Ibrahim was heard screaming that he can’t breathe. Another officer was seen pinning his head to the vehicle headrest.

In its reaction, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a statement on Monday said the arrest and manhandling of the diplomatic official was against international law and the Vienna Conventions governing Diplomatic and Consular Relations between states.

While expressing dissatisfaction at the inhumane treatment of the diplomatic agent, the Nigerian government said it had written to the government of Indonesia.

The Federal Government also revealed that the Ambassador of Indonesia to Nigeria has tendered an unreserved apology on behalf of the government of Indonesia over the ill treatment.
