Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari and vice president Yemi Osinbajo have honoured Nigeria’s fallen heroes at the 2020 Armed Forces Remembrance Day, TOPNAIJA.Ng reports.

As a custom, January 15 is set aside annually to honour members of the military who fought and are still fighting in various theatres of conflict within Nigeria and across the world.

The day also celebrates the living among the Armed Forces who have suffered some form of deprivation, owing to their experience while on the battlefront.

It also marks the surrender of Biafra troops to the Federal troops which signalled the end of the Nigerian civil war that lasted from 1967 to 1970.

Officials of the Nigerian Army, Navy, Air Force and the Nigerian legion converge in different centres across the nation to celebrate the day with parades.

In the nation’s capital, President Buhari, Services Chiefs, the leadership of the National Assembly, judiciary and members of the diplomatic corps paid their respects to the heroes at the Remembrance Arcade in Abuja.

Reacting to the developments, the Senator representing Plateau North, Istifanus Gyang has appealed to the Federal Government to use the 2020 Armed Forces Remembrance Day to review the welfare of serving officers and men as well as retirees, “including dead benefits and wellbeing of surviving families”.

He also said as the Deputy Chairman Senate Committee on Defence, the Committee will initiate and engage necessary legislative interventions to further equip and empower the Armed Forces “to effectively undertake and deliver on their clearly defined constitutional responsibility”.

Gyang disclosed this through his Special Adviser Media and Protocol, Ibrahim Musa Ashoms, on the occasion of the 2020 Armed Forces Remembrance Day, commemorated across the country.

He said, “As the nation marks the 2020 Armed Forces Remembrance Day, I salute officers and men of the Armed Forces and veterans alike who placed their lives on the line to secure the lives of citizens and preserve the territorial integrity of the nation.

Nigerians across the social media divide have come out to pour chilling, emotional, tributes to heroes that lost their lives on the battleline in defending their motherland.
