President Muhammadu Buhari has endorsed the release of funds for the payment of transient workers employed under the Special Public Works Programme.

Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Festus Keyamo, SAN, on Saturday, disclosed this in a tweet through his official handle.

Keyamo declared that he had instructed the National Directorate of Employment (NDE) to begin the payment process for the workers employed in the 774 Local Government Areas.

The minister in his verified Twitter handle wrote, “President Muhammadu Buhari has graciously directed a release of the funds for the payment of stipends to the 774,000 participants of the SPW programme.

“I have consequently directed the NDE to begin processing the payments and participants should begin to receive payments soon.

“In order to eliminate fraud and/or double payments, I have also directed that every payment to participants should be made using the BVN of their accounts so we can have an audit trail of every single payment. Those who registered with different names shouldn’t expect payments.”

Recollect that the Federal Government had in January this year, launched the 774,000 jobs, with each applicant supposed to be given N20,000 for the next three months.

Keyamo stated that said applicants will be paid via their Bank Verification Numbers (BVN) to eradicate fraud or paying the participants twice.

Sometime in October, 2019, President Muhammadu Buhari approved a Pilot Special Public Works Programme in the Rural Areas. The programme was domiciled in the National Directorate of Employment (NDE) for implementation.

The Special Public Works in the Rural Areas is an employment- intensive technique acquired and adapted by NDE from one of the capacity-building collaborations with the International Labour Organisation (ILO) in the late 1980’s to the middle of the 1990’s.

The Project was titled ILO/NDE Labour Based/ Light Equipment Methods of Construction, Rehabilitation and maintenance of Public Infrastructure.
