President Muhammadu Buhari, on Thursday, met with the new Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Abdulrasheed Bawa, at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

However, details of the closed-door meeting have not been disclosed, photographs from the meeting were shared on social media.

The photographs were titled, “President @MBuhari received in audience the newly appointed @officialEFCC Chairman, Abdulrasheed Bawa at the State House, Abuja.”

Buhari nominated Bawa for the EFCC job. He was confirmed yesterday by the Senate after a screening session.

In the course of the screening, Bawa addressed the allegation that he sold some assets which belong to the anti-graft Commission in Port Harcourt.

He said, “I never sold a single truck at the Port Harcourt office; the head office handled that at the time.”

“When I took over the Port Harcourt office, they had 34 convictions, but when I got there, we recorded 216 convictions.

“Anybody that is familiar with the processes of the EFCC knows that the chairman doesn’t have the power to sell an asset but the secretary of the agency.”

Abdulrasheed Bawa is a trained investigator with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). He joined EFCC in 2004 as an Assistant Detective Superintendent (ADS) and has spent his entire career working with the EFCC.

He has investigated and prosecuted series of financial crimes including advance fee fraud cases, official corruption, bank fraud, money laundering, and other economic crimes. He was one of the pioneer EFCC cadet officers in 2005.

Before his appointment as chairman of EFCC, Bawa was the head of Lagos Zonal office. He will replace Mohammed Umar who has been acting as the chairman of the EFCC since Ibrahim Magu was suspended.

In February, 2021, President Buhari wrote the Senate President, Ahmed Lawan and the Nigerian Senate seeking the confirmation of Abdulrasheed Bawa as the new Chairman of EFCC.

Bawa is married with children. He is a Muslim.
