Buhari govt fines Arise TV, TVC over breach of broadcast code

The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has fined Arise News TV and TVC N2 million each for violating the national broadcasting code in the run-up to the 2023 general elections.

NBC director general, Balarabe Shehu Ilelah, imposed the fines in separate letters sent to the management of the organizations.

The NBC has ordered that the fines must be paid within two weeks of receipt or face further sanctions.

The commission accused TVC News of broadcasting derogatory and unfair comments and not giving equal coverage to other political parties.

Arise TV was criticized for giving prominence to unfair content on its news program “What is Trending.”

The commission listed several examples of unprofessional broadcasts from both stations that violated the Nigeria Broadcasting Code.
