Brentford Star, Ivan Toney In Trouble With Football Authorities

Ivan Toney, a striker for Brentford, is facing a significant suspension after the English Football Association accused him of violating betting laws 232 times during a four-year period.

The 26-year-old, who had been a World Cup contender for England, said last week that he was helping the FA with its probe into a previous violation of gambling laws.

The alleged violations span the years 2017—when Ivan Toney was a player for Newcastle—and 2021—when he had transferred from Peterborough to Brentford.

Ivan Toney has been accused of misconduct in connection with alleged violations of the FA’s betting regulations, according to a statement from the FA.

“It is alleged that the Brentford FC forward breached FA rule E8 232 times between February 25, 2017 and January 23, 2021.”

The regulations prohibit participants from making bets on any football game, including ones in which they are not taking part.

England right-back, Kieran Trippier was  issued a 10-week suspension by the FA in December 2020 for disclosing information that allowed others to wager on his departure from Tottenham to Atletico Madrid.

When Gareth Southgate announced his traveling squad to Qatar, Toney was left off the list despite having been called up to the most recent England Nations League in September.

In an unexpected 2-1 victory for the Bees over Manchester City on Saturday, he replied by scoring twice.

“The club has been in discussion with Ivan and his legal representatives about this matter and those conversations will continue privately,” Brentford said in a statement.

“We will make no further comment until the matter has been completed.”

On November 6, Toney commented on Twitter after hearing about the FA investigation:

“I’m aware of a story about me in a national newspaper today.

“I have been assisting the Football Association with their enquiries and will not be making any comment until such investigation has reached its conclusion.”
