BREAKING: Tinubu to land Nigeria today, set to meet APC NWC
As Nigeria anticipates the inauguration of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu as the President-elect on May 29, the country is abuzz with the latest news that Tinubu may be returning from his recent trip to Paris and London to take charge of proceedings and provide direction.
According to a statement by Tunde Rahman for the Office of the President-elect, the trip was to enable Tinubu to rest and plan his transition programme ahead of his inauguration.
The National Working Committee of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is also preparing to meet with the former governor of Lagos to avert a repeat of the 2015 situation that produced Senator Bukola Saraki and Yakubu Dogara as Senate President and House of Representatives Speaker, respectively. This development highlights the high stakes involved in the selection of leaders for both chambers of the National Assembly.
James Faleke, the Secretary of the APC Presidential Campaign Council and a member of the House of Representatives, tweeted that Tinubu, along with his wife, Senator Remi Tinubu, would be landing at the presidential wing of the International Airport by 2 pm. Faleke also invited anyone in Abuja and Nasarawa to join in receiving the President-elect and First Lady.
A party chieftain and high-ranking member of the APC Presidential Campaign Council disclosed that Tinubu’s private jet would be hitting the tarmac of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja on Monday. He said that Tinubu would also be meeting with the party soon to discuss the leadership of the National Assembly.
The APC Director of Publicity, Bala Ibrahim, also confirmed that the NWC meeting might take place this week, although he could not confirm whether the President-elect would be in attendance.
Earlier on Sunday, the APC announced the dissolution of its Presidential Campaign Council, which was inaugurated in October to campaign for Tinubu’s victory. The dissolution was contained in a statement jointly signed by the PCC Director General, Governor Simon Lalong, and the Secretary of the Council, Faleke.
Lalong applauded President Muhammadu Buhari for his unflinching support for the APC presidential candidate throughout the electioneering campaign, saying that the campaign council had witnessed an unprecedented, relentless, and engaging mobilisation of members nationwide and in the diaspora towards securing the majority popular votes for the Tinubu/Shettima presidential ticket.
The journey has been a worthy one with our hard-won victory. The credit goes to all our members, particularly the leaders and members of the various campaign directorates.
The statement noted that the dissolution was necessary to retune the party towards the May 29 inauguration of the President-elect Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, adding that the process of transitioning into a new era of Renewed Hope was underway and all energies and activities must reflect the principles underlying this process.
Nigeria’s political landscape is full of high drama, tension, and intense competition, and the selection of leaders for both chambers of the National Assembly is no exception. The APC and the President-elect are keen to avoid a repeat of the 2015 situation, and the return of Tinubu to take charge of proceedings and provide direction is seen as a significant development.
As Nigerians await the inauguration of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu as the President-elect, they will be watching closely as the drama of the selection of leaders for both chambers of the National Assembly unfolds. The stakes are high, and the outcome of this process will have far-reaching implications for Nigeria’s future.
