FG approves second dose of AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine

The Lagos State Government announced that it had obtained doses of the Oxford-AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccines from the Federal Government.

The Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu made this known on Tuesday in Ikeja, while talking at the 2021 International Women’s Day celebration organised by the Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation (WAPA).

He stated that the State Government received the vaccines at 4am on Tuesday and they were preserved in a safe place.

The Governor guaranteed residents that the State Government would soon begin the inoculation in accordance with the scheduled guidelines established by the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA).

Sanwo-Olu appealed to residents to keep adhering to the COVID-19 protocols like wearing of face mask, washing of hands and observing social distance.

The Chief Press Secretary to the Governor of Lagos State, Gboyega Akosile, while also declaring the arrival of the vaccines, said, “We’re making progress. The world will see the end of the pandemic. Good morning Lagos.”

The Federal Government, on March 2, received four million doses of the Oxford-AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccines through the COVAX Facility.

The Governor of Ogun State, Prince Dapo Abiodun, had on Monday, taken delivery of doses of AstraZeneca/Oxford COVID-19 vaccine given to the state by the Federal Government.

The Oxford–AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine, codenamed AZD1222, is a COVID-19 vaccine developed by Oxford University and AstraZeneca given by intramuscular injection, using as a vector the modified chimpanzee adenovirus ChAdOx1.

On 24 February 2021, Ghana became the first country in Africa to receive the Covid-19 vaccine through the COVAX initiative, where the facility sent six hundred thousand doses of AstraZeneca/Oxford jabs to Accra.

The research is being done by the Oxford University’s Jenner Institute and Oxford Vaccine Group with the collaboration of the Italian manufacturer Advent Srl located in Pomezia.

It produced the first batch of the COVID-19 vaccine for clinical testing. The team is led by Sarah Gilbert, Adrian Hill, Andrew Pollard, Teresa Lambe, Sandy Douglas and Catherine Green.
