BREAKING: Bawa shows up at Senate for screening as EFCC chairman
The acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Abdulrasheed Bawa, has shown up at the Senate for screening, Top Naija has learnt.
Bawa, a 40-year-old, if affirmed will be the youngest person ever to serve as chairman of the country’s leading anti-corruption agency.
He will likewise be the chief centre EFCC official and non-police officer to head the agency, an accomplishment which has been hailed by a vast majority of the EFCC staff.
The candidate’s nomination has, nonetheless, been met with criticism following claims of corruption levelled against him by the past EFCC leadership.
Bawa is also believed to be the nominee of the Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami (SAN).
Abdulrasheed Bawa was born in 1980. He is from Kebbi State.
He attended Model Primary School Birnin-Kebbi Road, Sokoto where he obtained his First School Leaving Certificate in 1991. In 1997, he obtained his SSCE certificate from Government Secondary School, Owerri.
Bawa holds a degree in Economic and a master’s degree in International Affairs and Diplomacy. He is currently studying law at the University of London.
He is a trained investigator with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). He joined EFCC in 2004 as an Assistant Detective Superintendent (ADS) and has spent his entire career working with the EFCC.
Bawa has investigated and prosecuted series of financial crimes including advance fee fraud cases, official corruption, bank fraud, money laundering, and other economic crimes. He was one of the pioneer EFCC cadet officers in 2005.
Before his appointment as chairman of EFCC, Bawa was the head of Lagos Zonal office. He will replace Mohammed Umar who has been acting as the chairman of the EFCC since Ibrahim Magu was suspended.
In February, 2021, President Buhari wrote the Senate President, Ahmed Lawan and the Nigerian Senate seeking the confirmation of Abdulrasheed Bawa as the new Chairman of EFCC.
Bawa is married with children. He is a Muslim.
