The Academic staff union of Nigerian university (ASUU), has conditionally suspended the over eight months strike.

ASUU National President, Biodun Ogunyemi made the announcement during a briefing of the union in Abuja, explaining that the development followed consultations with its National Executive Council (NEC).

T0pNaija had earlier reported that the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, on Tuesday, assured Nigerians that the prolonged strike by the varsity lecturers would be called off before January 15.

Ogunyemi also said the lecturers sympathised with students who were also their children, adding that “no amount of sacrifice would be too much to get the matter resolved as long as the government is consistent with its commitments.”

The strike commenced on 23 March, 2020. Ogunyemi said NEC resolved to accept the agreement reached between ASUU and Federal Government on 22 Dec 2020.

He said NEC resolved to conditionally suspend the strike action.

He said the decision to call off the strike was based on the agreement reached between ASUU and government at a meeting on 22 December, 2020.
