Noor Mukadam, the daughter of a former Pakistani diplomat, was allegedly raped, tortured and beheaded by her boyfriend in July.
Zahir Jaffer, a 30 year old Pakistani-American from a wealthy industrialist family and boyfriend to murdered Mukadam is the primary suspect in the murder case.
The cold and brutal murder of the 27 year old Noor Mukadam, sparked public outrage and protests across Pakistan while calls to reform gender based violence laws were made.
On Wednesday, Zahir Jaffer went on trial at the nation’s capital, Islamabad. Zahir has pleaded not guilty in the murder charge.
“The trial has formally started. Our first witness was examined today and we will produce five more witnesses at the next hearing”, Shah Khawar, a prosecution lawyer told AFP outside the court in Islamabad.
A police report said Mukadam was attacked after refusing Jaffer’s marriage proposal. She had made repeated attempts to escape Jaffer’s sprawling mansion in an upscale neighbourhood in Islamabad but was blocked by his staff each time.
The report added that Jaffer allegedly raped and tortured her with a knuckle duster before beheading her with a sharp weapon.
According to the report, Mukadam would still be alive if the staff members had acted differently.
A total of eleven others, including Jaffer’s parents and household staff, have been charged as accomplices for concealing evidence.
