Border Security: Kamala Harris fires back at Trump

Vice President Kamala Harris is ramping up her campaign strategy, taking a hard stance on illegal immigration to counter Donald Trump on his signature issue.

This aggressive new approach will be highlighted in a series of campaign events and digital ads, according to her campaign staff.

Kamala Harris plans to showcase her support for a bipartisan border security bill, which was defeated in the Senate in February after Trump opposed it. The bill aimed to increase funding for border agents and detention facilities, signaling a tougher stance on border security.

As she campaigns across the country with her running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, Harris will emphasize Trump’s controversial immigration policies. She will particularly highlight his 2018 family separation policy at the U.S.-Mexico border and his 2017 executive order attempting to ban travel from certain Muslim-majority countries, parts of which were upheld by the Supreme Court.

This shift allows Harris to reintroduce herself to voters following President Joe Biden’s withdrawal from the race. “It’s all part of a larger effort by Harris to be direct and to go directly at Trump,” said Matt Barreto, a pollster who has worked with both Harris and Biden campaigns. “Democrats always do well when they lean in on the immigration issue and don’t run away from it.”

Harris’ tougher stance marks a departure from Biden’s 2020 campaign, which promised a more humane approach to immigration. However, Biden’s administration gradually adopted a harder line as illegal crossings increased.

The Trump campaign has attempted to blame Harris for illegal immigration, labeling her a failed “border czar” despite her role focusing on the root causes of migration from Central America. By taking a more enforcement-first position, Harris aims to challenge this narrative and attract voters from America’s heartland.
