Blackout hits Kogi and Abuja as Power grid collapses

Residents in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, and parts of Kogi State are currently grappling with power outages attributed to technical glitches affecting the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC).

According to reports, the AEDC has cited a technical fault on the 33kv feeder k6 from the AT9 Karu Transmission Station as the cause of the power disruption. Affected areas include Zamani Estate, Abacha Road Mararaba, Ruga Juli, Old Karu Road, Glory Estate, and surrounding environs in Abuja.

In response to the situation, the AEDC has assured customers that the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) maintenance crew is diligently working to rectify the issue and restore electricity supply to the affected regions. The company expressed regret over any inconvenience caused by the outage.

Prior to this, the TCN had announced planned maintenance on its TR3 45MVA and TR2 60MVA power transformers at the 132/33kV Okene Transmission Substation. This maintenance activity, scheduled from Tuesday to Wednesday, is expected to disrupt power supply to areas including Okene, Kabba, Ososo, and Ikare during the specified period.

TCN spokesperson Ndidi Mbah explained that once maintenance is completed, bulk power supply will be restored to Abuja DisCo customers immediately.

Meanwhile, in a separate development, the TCN has commissioned a 100MVA 132/33kV power transformer at its Port Harcourt Main Transmission Substation. This initiative, carried out in collaboration with the World Bank, aims to enhance the substation’s bulk transmission capability by 80MW.

The project also includes the rehabilitation and expansion of the transmission substation, along with the addition of three feeders and associated accessories.

With the installation of the new power transformer, the substation’s installed capacity has increased from 180MVA to 280MVA, bringing significant benefits to industries in the Trans Amadi industrial area and surrounding communities beyond Port Harcourt city.
