Benue State to train youths with foreign ICT experts at ATPoly
The Benue State Government has announced plans to bring in foreign-based professionals to provide practical skills in technology and Information Communication Technology (ICT) at Akawe Torkula Polytechnic (ATPoly), Makurdi.
This initiative aims to equip youths with the knowledge required for international certifications, making them self-reliant.
Dr. Martins Agena, Rector of ATPoly, disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday in Lagos. He stated that this move aligns with Governor Hyacinth Alia’s administration’s efforts to elevate the polytechnic to international standards and ensure Benue indigenes gain valuable, productive skills.
The Polytechnic has finalized arrangements with technical partners from the UK, Canada, and the U.S., who will serve as resource persons to lecture students on skills acquisition. These professionals, affiliated with reputable institutions, will provide virtual instruction, eliminating the need for physical travel to Benue State.
“There are non-governmental organizations and individuals willing to support innovative ideas, especially in science and technology, which are core to technical education,” Agena said. He emphasized that private individuals and friends are eager to contribute to this initiative.
Highlighting the global village concept, Agena noted that boundaries are no longer a barrier to education. “The resource persons we are engaging don’t need to travel to Benue State or Makurdi. We are creating classroom technology that is virtual for now, allowing us to hold lectures conveniently.”
Despite challenges in polytechnic education, Agena expressed confidence, citing strong support from Governor Alia, who is committed to improving the lives of Benue youths. “Gov. Alia is determined to give citizens the technical skills that will make them self-reliant. He has been insistent on upgrading the polytechnic to global standards.”
Agena also linked the initiative to broader social benefits, suggesting that educating youths and providing them with essential skills could reduce insecurity by keeping them off the streets and away from criminal activities.
The Benue State Government’s prioritization of education reflects its strategic approach to addressing social issues and fostering a skilled, self-reliant populace.
