Barcelona Will Be Unable To Sign Players Next Season – Tebas

La Liga President, Javier Tebas, has confirmed that Barcelona will not be allowed to sign or register new players in the upcoming transfer market due to their financial problems.

Despite currently sitting at the top of the La Liga table, Barcelona has faced significant financial challenges in recent times, forcing them to ask first-team players to take pay cuts and sell domestic TV rights and their in-house media studio to balance their books.

Barcelona’s financial difficulties have led to a budget deficit of minus €200m, which means that they will only be able to spend 40% of the cash they raise from offloading players.

Speaking at the FT Business of Football summit in London, Tebas said that La Liga has imposed strict economic controls on Barcelona and they have been involved in questionable behaviour that has had an impact on La Liga.

Tebas stated that Barcelona has been ruled out from signing new players until they sell some of their existing ones.

He also revealed that La Liga has advised Barcelona to sell players to raise funds and that the club will have to reduce its investment in players. Tebas further revealed that they have told all clubs in La Liga what they can spend at the end of each transfer window.

Barcelona has had to adhere to a salary cap imposed by La Liga, but the club was recently fined £705,000 for breaching Financial Fair Play regulations related to the signings of Dani Alves and Andreas Christensen, as well as the contract extension for defender Ronaldo Araujo from the 2021/22 financial year.

Barcelona’s inability to sign new players is expected to have a significant impact on their plans for the summer transfer window.

The club has been linked with several high-profile players, including Erling Haaland and Sergio Aguero, but their current financial situation means that they may have to reconsider their transfer targets.

“As of today, Barcelona doesn’t have any room in its budget to spend in the upcoming transfer window, Tebas said at the FT Business of Football summit in London, as per Martin Lipton of The Sun.

“Barcelona has been involved in questionable behaviour which has had an impact on LaLiga – and we are acting accordingly.

“We have ruled that they can no longer sign more players. They sold off €700m in TV rights and tried to find different ways to solve the situation. But they won’t be able to do that next season.

“We have strict economic controls. At the end of each window, we tell all the clubs in La Liga what they can spend. In the case of Barcelona, they have to drop from spending on wages and transfers from €650m to €450m – so it’s a budget of minus €200 million.

“They have to reduce their investment in players and we have encouraged them to sell players because for every amount they raise in sales they can spend 40 per cent of that.”
