Barcelona threatens to sue Frenkie de Jong in move to Force him out
The Frenkie de Jong saga refuses to die down as new report states that Barcelona threatens legal actions on the player regarding a criminality found in his contract.
The Catalan club according to David Ornstein is reported to have penned a letter to the Dutchman claiming to have evidence of criminal actions in the contract renewal he signed on October 20, 2020.
In response Barcelona threatens to sue unless Frenkie de Jong rips up the current contract he is on and revert to the previous deal he was once on.
This is as a result of claims that the current terms he received from the club’s previous board involved some criminality in it.
The Dutch midfielder during the height of the Covid 19 saga, signed a 2 year extension until 2026 that reduced his salary for the 2020/21 and 2021/22 season to help solve Barca’s financial woes.
It left the former Ajax man with €18m (£15.2m) in deferred payments to be spread across the subsequent four campaigns.
Those deferred payments are the problem the club is facing this summer, with De Jong reportedly refusing to leave the club unless he is paid what he is owed.
Manchester United have had a bid accepted for De Jong but the Netherlands international is yet to agree to the move, with the money being owed thought to be a major reason for his reluctance to leave the Camp Nou.
This has led Barcelona’s plan to sell the player to free up funds stalling, with the club unable to register new signings.
The letter which was sent to De Jong on July 14 reads that:
“They are in a position to initiate criminal proceedings to establish what happened in relation to the signing of his contract and ascertain where responsibility resides for the supposed wrongdoing.”
Contrary to the current board’s claims, the previous board are confident there is no criminality involved in the contract renewal, citing that La Liga were also involved in the approval.
Despite the frustrating situation, current Barcelona president, Joan Laporta still sits coy on the Frenkie situation, stating instead:
“He is a Barca player of great quality and we want him to stay. He has offers but we want him to stay and he wants to stay too.”
