Eras End, Gary Lineker On Gerard Pique Retirement

Barcelona are not ready to listen to the idea of Gerard Pique playing for free even if the player has offered to play for free.

Talk about a love for one’s club, as Barcelona’s centre back, Gerard Pique in response to Barcelona’s financial situation agreed to waive off the outstanding debt he is being owed by the club and even offered to play for free.

Of course, that notion was declined upon at its very suggestion by the Joan Laporta led management.

The Catalan club saw itself enter financial mess due to the actions of the previous leadership under Josep Bartomeu, and from its fall out has found it difficult to register new signings for the coming La Liga season.

With the League having given the club a deadline to cut its wage bill to balance the books ahead of the coming season, the former Manchester United player, came in to play hero for his club.

The veteran defender agreed a huge waive of the wages he is being owed after deferring part of his salary for the last 2 seasons.

In essence, Gerard Pique is set to return to his original contract terms before he signed the deal that put Barcelona in financial troubles under Josep Maria Bartomeu’s reign.

The deal will go on to 2024, but this time with the defender being paid the terms he was on before the current contract was signed, which had included the promise to pay back deferred wages in his 2 remaining years at the club, that Pique is now ready to waive off.

It is believed that during the negotiations, Gerard Pique had even suggested playing for free, something Barcelona were not ready to listen to.
