Barcelona Chief, Joan Laporta Comes Clean On Bribery Allegations

Barcelona President, Joan Laporta, has denied allegations of paying referees, following the revelation of payments made to former vice president of the refereeing committee, Jose Maria Enriquez Negreira. Barca paid Negreira’s company approximately €7 million between 2001 and 2018, with payments totaling €1.4m between 2016 and 2018, which are currently being investigated by the tax office.

Laporta initially claimed that the payments were for “technical reports on refereeing,” but has now reiterated that Barcelona did not pay for anything else. He insisted that the club “never bought referees or influence” and said that the facts contradict those who are trying to tell a different story.

“We will give a news conference on it soon. But Barca never bought referees or influence. That was never the intention and that has to be clear. The facts contradict those that are trying to tell a different story,” Laporta said.

The allegations of payment to Negreira have sparked concern and controversy in the football world, with some speculating that it could lead to consequences for Barcelona. However, Laporta’s denial of the allegations may help to ease tensions and alleviate fears of potential repercussions.

The situation is ongoing, and it remains to be seen what the outcome will be. But Laporta’s statement suggests that Barcelona is committed to transparency and accountability, and will defend itself against any allegations of wrongdoing.
