Chief Raymond Dokpesi, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP), has attributed the ethnic and religious divisions in Nigeria to bad leadership.

In an interview with Bridget Chiedu Onochie of The Guardian, Dokpesi explained the reason he supports a northern PDP president for 2023, saying it was the party’s agreement that the north does eight years in office after President Obasanjo.

However, this was unrealized due to President Umar Yar’adua’s early demise. In order to fulfil this agreement, he said the north needs to complete two terms in office.

“So, by 2015, the PDP had been 16years in power, 14 years of the South and two years of north and that is the situation up till today. You say you believe in justice, fairness and equity, the North has done two years and the South has done 14 years. Is that balanced?”, he said.

Speaking about the current divide in the country and secessionist agitations, Dokpesi said that bad leadership, religious extremists and others are to blame.

“I believe that we need to restructure Nigeria effectively. You like it or you hate the word ‘restructure’, it is just the foundation and the first thing we must do to move ahead. So, you need to look for a leader who believes in restructuring and reorganising Nigeria, in moving Nigeria from oil based economy to a diversified economy”. Dokpesi said.

“We need somebody who believes that creating jobs does not mean taking people, whether qualified or unqualified into the civil service. It is productivity that will bring about the growth of the economy. So there must be industry.”

Dokpesi also spoke about his relationship with APC’s Bola Ahmed Tinubu and much more.
