Babatunde Olusegun Adewale, popularly known by his stage name Modenine, is an English-born Nigerian rapper.


EARLY LIFE
Mode9 was born in United Kingdom, London on the 14th of june, 1975. But maintains Osun State as his origin. He is the third child of his parents. He came back to Nigeria in 1979. As a child, his ambition was to become a Spaceman. His parents were not pleased with him when he decided to go into music completely in 2000. 

 

EDUCATION
Babatunde Olusegun Adewale attended Agboju secondary school. He earned a degree in Building Technology at Bida, Federal Polytechnic Niger State, Nigeria.

CAREER
Modenine who was greatly influenced by artists like KRS-One, Roy Ayers, Kurtis Blow and Big Daddy Kane started his music career while hanging out with friends in school, rapping. In 1991, he decided to make a rap album just for the fun of it. He worked with Rhythm 84.7fm in Abuja (a sister station to Rhythm 93.7 Lagos) as a small time radio presenter featuring up and coming rap acts like Terry Da Rapman and Six-Foot Plus.

He secured a deal with Paybacktyme Records after being introduced to Solo Dee, the owner of the imprint by Ayo Animashaun who he met while in school and quit the radio program. He recorded an album called IX files in 2002 which never saw the light of day but singles like ‘It’s About To Get Ugly’ and ‘Schooling’ emerged from the unreleased album bringing him in tight competition with other hip hop acts.

In 2004, he released his debut album, ‘Malcolm IX – The Lost Sessions’ on Payback Tyme Records which was followed closely by his Pentium IX – The Mixtape while signed to Question Mark Entertainment.

In 2007, he released E ‘Pluribus Unum and it was heralded as one of the best Hip hop albums to come out of Africa , getting airplay on New york’s Hot 97 In 2008, he had the opportunity to tour through Singapore and Malaysia, alongside Terry tha Rapman, as well as be a Judge in the ‘Sprite Emcee Africa’ competition, a South African based, Africa wide freestyle battle and talent search. releasing ‘Paradigm Shift’ in 2008 and ‘DaVinci Mode’ in 2010 on his own Redeye Muzik imprint.

In 2014, he released a single titled ‘Super Human’ with Jamaican-American rapper Canibus before going on to release the album ‘Alphabetical Order’ in thesame year. The single, Super Human was featured on dozens of notable websites on the web including 2DopeBoyz, African Hip Hop Blog, DJ Booth, iStandard Producers, etc.

Modenine known for his sick wordplay and inimitable lyricism stated in an interview, that his latest project, ‘Insulin,’ would be his last album released in Nigeria insisting that it was better to leave when the ovation is loudest and even though he might release albums in other countries, nnone of those countries would be Nigeria.

 

FAMILY
