Awka under siege: gunmen claim over 15 lives in two weeks

In a recent surge of violence, Awka, the capital of Anambra State, has once again fallen victim to armed assailants, suspected to be cultists.

Over the past two weeks, the city has witnessed a wave of killings, with reports of more than 15 residents brutally murdered. Among the victims are individuals not associated with any cults, sparking fears that the attacks may be targeted assassinations.

Investigations indicate that the primary motive behind the violence revolves around a struggle for control over revenue sources, particularly the collection of taxes from bus drivers and commercial tricyclists.

The spate of killings began on Easter Sunday, with six youths reportedly gunned down in various parts of the city. Subsequent incidents occurred in locations such as Okpuno area, behind Juhel, Eke Awka area, and Obinagu.

Among the victims was Mr. Nwofor, a staff member of the Anambra State Judiciary, who was fatally shot while going about his daily activities.

In a concerning turn of events, three more individuals suspected to be linked to secret cults were killed just seven days after the Easter attacks. Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos and panic as armed assailants pursued and gunned down their targets in broad daylight.

The violence escalated further when prominent figures in the community became targets. Chief Cajetan Nwokike, a former president-general of Amansea community, and Christian, a manager of a popular transport company, were among those brutally murdered.

Despite the alarming escalation of violence, the Anambra State Police Command has faced challenges in obtaining crucial information, as families of the deceased often fail to notify the authorities, hindering investigations.

In a recent press conference, the police expressed frustration over the release of arrested cult kingpins, allegedly facilitated by influential individuals in the city. Commissioner of Police, CP Aderemi Adeoye, warned against subverting justice and vowed to hold accountable those obstructing efforts to curb the violence.

In response to the escalating crisis, local stakeholders have initiated efforts to address the security challenges in Awka. Elected and appointed officials have joined forces to engage security agencies and devise strategies to restore peace and security in the city.

As concerns mount over the deteriorating security situation, residents await decisive action from Governor Soludo, urging him to prioritize the protection of lives and property in the state capital.
