how to avoid these common regrets people have later in life

Published

on

We all make choices in our lives and for every choice you make, you are choosing to not do the opposite. We are free to make decisions and respond to various situations how we please. But when we respond from our ego-mind, which often is fueled by emotions, we often act in a manner that we will later regret.

There is an opportunity cost for every decision we make. They would not all turn out great. And we will always wonder how life could have been better if we made the opposite choice.

Make sure you won’t have these regrets when you get to your old age:

  1. Not Travelling When You Had the Chance

This is one of the most common regrets you hear. By travel, I’m talking about when you are exploring as much as you can, you are young, single, no prior commitments, and you are in your peak physical state. That’s an experience you really can’t miss out on.

  1. Staying in a Bad Relationship

Are you someone staying in a bad relationship, simply because you are too scared to be alone? So many people stay with their partners simply out of fear and eventually, this will become a HUGE regret when you are in a relationship has made you miserable and it’s too late to take back all those years you spent with them.

  1. Caring too Much About What Other People Think

Fear of what other people would think can hold one captive. Truth is, it’s your life, and you have to be happy with it. You cannot let the opinions of others dictate how you are going to live your life. Stop worrying so much about what other people will think of you for the decisions you make.

  1. Being Afraid to Say ‘I Love You’

Why are we so afraid to say ‘I love you’? Because it might make us vulnerable or because the other person might not feel the same way? These words could make somebody’s day, their week, their month, their year, even their life.

  1. Working too Much

One of the biggest regrets people have is having worked too much their whole life that they forgot to actually live. They were so busy trying to make money to have all the things they wanted, that they were unable to have fun and unable to even use all the things they worked so hard for. Try and find work-life balance, so that you can make money doing what you love, but also have the free time to use it.

  1. Not Spending Enough Time With Your Parents

Not spending enough time with your parents is another common regret. It’s expected that you will outlive your parents, and it’s unreasonable to think that they will be around forever. If you don’t spend enough time with them now, you will regret not doing so when they are gone and it’s too late.

  1. Not Quitting a Terrible Job

Isn’t this the reason why most people end up being miserable? After focusing so much on getting rich quickly, you then realize that you are not doing that job that makes you happy. But by that point, you already have a ton of responsibilities and it becomes harder to leave their job. Pick a career you love, and worry about the rest later.

  1. Not Realizing How Beautiful You Are

Far too many people are insecure when they have absolutely no reason to be. We are all unique, and we’re all beautiful. Don’t let this become a regret of yours. Be confident in yourself, believe in your dreams. You only live once.
