The Director-General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, discloses that the Astrazeneca vaccine recently initiated and dispersed to states to treat COVID-19 has no side effect.

Adeyeye, who declared this on Thursday in Abuja, soon after she got vaccinated, stated that NAFDAC went through the application dossier of the vaccine before its approval to be administered on Nigerians in treating COVID-19.

She said, “When we got the dossier or the application package of the vaccine, we went through it line by line, but before we got the application itself, we went through other assessments.

“I am talking about their assessment report so that we are prepared and guided when we start our own and that was exactly what happened.

“We conclude, based on quality, safety and efficacy because we have to depend on the report, this particular AstraZeneca vaccine, over 20, 000 people were involved in phase three of the report.”

NAFDAC DG said that the efficacy of AstraZeneca vaccine exceeds the risk, as it has already been investigated.

Adeyeye further stated that there was no medicine without its side effect, particularly when still going through the developmental stage.

She noted that from all indications of superiority and effectiveness, the advantage of AstraZeneca vaccine exceeds the danger and the side effect.

The director-general declared that the agency also believed in herbal medicine, nevertheless it must be backed with research before such could be endorsed.

Adeyeye further said that such herbal medicine must be antiviral to serve different ailments.

She said that NAFDAC had received 14 of such herbal medicines for listing to determine if it was safe to use it.

She stated that the agency must likewise do its own clinical trials before any herbal medicine would be endorsed.

Adeyeye revealed that the Federal Government had arranged for a research and development scheme for the health sector, also a great deal of herbal medicine would be utilised for the testing.
