Aston Villa boss, Steven Gerrard criticizes the notion Villa have nothing to play for

Ask any Reds fan what’s on their wish list now, and they’ll tell you they are looking forward to that one last miracle from Liverpool legend, Stevie G to once more get over the line ‘in a final’.

Of course, he has done it before, multiple times as a player. He has engineered great comebacks for Liverpool in finals as a player; in a Champions League final, FA Cup and even some premier league games, but could he replicate it as a Manager; for another club?

It’s hope against hope.

And now, Steven Gerrard has come to the public to rubbish claims that Aston Villa have nothing to play for again in their final 2 EPL games of the season considering they are not fighting for the title, European spots or against relegation.

How dare anyone think that? Gerrard is a fierce competitor who loves to win. Telling him he has nothing left to fight for is saying he has no reason to be a premier league manager.

On the off side, Gerrard and Villa have everything to fight for; the League title for Liverpool; which of course, he would most definitely deny with his tongue in cheek.

Despite languishing in mid table, Villa know that they are in a safe position in the league, where they no longer have anything to worry about, but they very much stand a chance to make themselves famous to history by dictating how things shape up come final match day. Who wouldn’t stand up for a chance at glory?

First, they will host relegation-threatened Burnley on Thursday at Villa Park, where they can either doom Burnley, or gift them hope against relegation rivals Everton and Leeds, before facing off against Pep Guardiola’s side on Sunday , who can clinch a fourth title in five years or finish second after having topped the EPL table since December with 14 points.

But when it was put to Gerrard in his press conference on Wednesday that Villa’s opponents have far more to play for than themselves, the former Anfield captain wasn’t ready to have anything to do with such narratives.

“No they haven’t. No they haven’t,” argued Gerrard. “Well, maybe from their point of view but I’m not involved in a relegation or a title, am I? I’m the Aston Villa manager. They’re three important points. We’ll have a full house there. We’ve got 20,000 people on a waiting list to come and watch the team so it’s my responsibility to win both games. Thank you.” He defended.

Gerrard added: “We want two positive results. We want to finish as strong as we can and we want to improve our league position. Obviously, they’re going to be two different challenges, we know that, one fighting at the top-end of the league and one at the bottom. We need to prepare for both in the best way that we can. They’re coming within a short space of time so all of my players need to be ready because I’ll be very surprised if the team will be the same for both games.”
