Arsenal ready to back Mikel Arteta over VAR statement
Arsenal Football Club has thrown its full support behind their manager, Mikel Arteta, following his outspoken remarks about what he deemed as “unacceptable refereeing and VAR errors” during a recent match.
The club released a statement reiterating their endorsement of Arteta’s post-match comments and urging the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) to address the quality of officiating.
In a strongly-worded statement, Arsenal stated,
“Arsenal Football Club wholeheartedly supports Mikel Arteta’s post-match comments after yet more unacceptable refereeing and VAR errors on Saturday evening.”
The club added that;
“PGMOL urgently needs to address the standard of officiating and focus on the action which moves us all on from retrospective analysis, attempted explanations, and apologies.”
The statement is in response to Mikel Arteta’s full on rant in his post-match interview with the press after the defeat to Newcastle United at the Saint James’ Park.
In Arteta’s statement, he criticized the VAR decision to rule in favor of Newcastle United after Anthony Gordon’s goal counted despite the ball already going out of play.
Arsenal’s stance somehow mirrors rivals, Liverpool who also took a bold stand against the PGMOL following some controversial calls in their premier league tie versus Tottenham Hotspur some weeks ago.
