Arsenal in position to cause Liverpool problems in January
Arsenal is reportedly aiming to swoop in and potentially thwart Liverpool in their pursuit of a midfield alternative to Moises Caicedo.
And just as their move for Moises Caicedo fell into shambles, Liverpool risk having a deal for their defensive midfield cover fall into shambles for a second time running if the player chooses Arsenal over them.
The summer transfer window saw Liverpool engage in a high-stakes negotiation with Brighton and Hove Albion for the services of Caicedo, a deal that came with a record-breaking £110 million price tag.
However, Liverpool’s efforts came to naught as the Ecuadorian midfielder ultimately chose to join Chelsea, with the Blues shelling out a staggering £115 million to secure his signature.
In light of this, Liverpool had reportedly shifted their focus to Fluminense’s Brazilian midfielder, Andre, as an alternative to Caicedo.
According to report from This Is Anfield, the Merseyside club had submitted a £25 million bid during the summer transfer window but was met with rejection by the Brazilian outfit.
Still keen on the player, Liverpool seems intent on making another bid in January.
However, journalist Thiago Ferreira has introduced a new twist to the story, asserting that Arsenal is now in the race to sign Andre.
He reported, “Arsenal are interested in Andre and will try to cross Liverpool for him.”
The sudden Arsenal interest follows a visit to Fluminense’s training ground by the club’s sporting director, Edu, signaling a potential partnership between the two clubs.
Andre’s transfer saga has been an ongoing narrative, with Fluminense hoping to retain the talented midfielder for as long as possible.
According to Brazilian journalist Josue Seixas,
“The team (Fluminense) would not work if he was not available. I think they will try to hold him as long as possible, which is until December, the end of the Brazilian season.”
The summer transfer window saw Liverpool initiate a midfield overhaul after parting ways with key players like Fabinho, Jordan Henderson, James Milner, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, and Naby Keita.
Jurgen Klopp responded by bringing in four new midfielders, namely Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Wataru Endo, and Ryan Gravenberch.
