APPLY: “The Africa of My Dreams” – Young Africans, Get Writing! Contest

What does the future of Africa look like? How will the fourth industrial revolution shape the economies, jobs and lives of tomorrow? The African Development Bank is prompting Africa’s youth to think about these questions, put pen to paper and enter The Africa of my Dreams writing contest, launched on Thursday, 22 February 2018.

The Bank recognizes the energy, creativity and innovative thinking that many of our youth bring to the table.

Ahead of the AfDB Annual Meetings, that will be held on the theme “Accelerating Africa’s Industrialization”, in Busan, Korea, in May 2018, we have launched a writing competition for young Africans aged 20-29.

All you have to do is write an article (no longer than 1,000 words) on the Africa of your dreams, based on any of the following sub-themes.

  • Smart Cities and Urban Development
  • The Internet of Things
  • Agriculture as a Business
  • 4thIndustrial Revolution
  • ICTs and the video game industry
  • Inclusive and sustainable industrial development
  • Integrating Africa through Entertainment
  • Blockchain and cryptocurrency
  • The future of entrepreneurship
  • Health innovation

The contest aims to reinforce the Bank’s commitment to Africa’s youth and bring their voice and perspective into discussions of the continent’s development.

WORTH

  • Four winners will receive an all-expense paid trip to participate in the Bank’s Annual Meetingstaking place in May this year in Busan, Korea.
  • Winners in each category will also take home a laptop computer, and runners-up will get tablets.

ELIGIBILITY

  • Entries will be received from young media professionals as well as the general public between the ages of 20 to 29 can enter the competition.
  • Participants must be a national of one of the 54 African countries and submit an unpublished journalistic piece, in the media category, or an unpublished essay or creative writing piece, in the general category.
  • Entries must be no longer than 1,000 words, be in English or French—the Bank’s two official languages—and be related to the contest’s theme, “Accelerating Africa’s Industrialization”.
