Any attack on Nuclear plant suicidal—UN Sec-Gen warns

The United Nations Secretary General, Antonio Guterres has warned against any direct attack on nuclear power plants, stating it is very much a disastrous occurrence that was in itself suicidal.

He made this in reference to the recent artillery and rocket fire around the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant in Ukraine.

While speaking to reporters in Tokyo, Japan and from quotes by CNN, the UN chief stated in response to the attacks:

“Any attack on nuclear power plants is a suicidal thing. I hope that these attacks will end.”

In advocating for a ceasefire, the UN Secretary General called on the International Atomic Energy Agency (LAEA) to be given direct access to the plant in Zaporizhzhia.

The Zaporizhzhia plant boasts of being Europe’s largest and occupies an extensive site on the river Dnipro.

In the early stages of the Russian invasion, the nuclear power station was captured by the Russians in March and has so far continued operating at a reduced capacity.
