Angry mobs revolt as security operatives ‘kill’ trader in Jos

Monday brought intense conflict that boiled over the Bukur town of Jos South local government area of Plateau State.

Following one individual shot dead during an operation by a combined security task force including Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Police and Operation Rainbow, executing the legislation prohibiting roadside trade, the tension grew. Two others were injured.

Angry young people stopped roads and burned tires following the tragedy, a scenario that terrified Bukur general area inhabitants.

Bello Muhammad, the Youth Leader of Bukuru Community, confirmed the murder to our correspondent and claimed the event commenced about 2:00pm.

More than five cars, he said, the enraged young people set ablaze.

Muhammed said, “Some traders were going about their normal businesses, when suddenly armed security personnel deployed by JMBD descended on them.

They shot three of our younger brothers, killed one, while two others got injured.

Musa Aliyu, the father of the dead, claimed that his thirty-year-old son was running mobile phone business in the neighborhood before the event.

He also mentioned that his kid was not trading on the road when the security guards supposedly shot him.

“I am the father of Muhammad Nasiru. The security operatives went to the area where my son and other people were selling phones, destroying the cardboards used to display the phones. I was called and informed that he and others had been shot, and that Nasiru had died,” the father said.

As at the time of publishing this story, DSP Alabo Alfred, the Spokesperson of the state police command, had not answered questions by our correspondent.
