"Anfield felt like nothing" -- Andre Onana banters Liverpool

Most people will consider going to Anfield as an opposition player a dreadful journey but for Manchester United goalkeeper, Andre Onana, the Liverpool stadium is only overrated.

In the aftermath of Manchester United’s hard-fought 0-0 draw against Liverpool at Anfield, goalkeeper Andre Onana took a critical stance regarding the atmosphere despite the record-breaking attendance.

Anfield witnessed a historic evening with the newly-renovated Anfield Road stand accommodating 7,000 fans, elevating the total attendance to 57,000 – a figure unseen in league matches since 1949.

Despite the electrifying setting, Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool encountered frustration as they dropped home points for the first time this season, with United’s defense holding firm despite Liverpool’s dominance.

Reflecting on the atmosphere, Onana, in a candid assessment, dismissed noticing the renowned Anfield ambiance, highlighting his accustomedness to high-intensity encounters, especially at Manchester United.

“At Manchester United, the expectations are high, and I must be prepared for everything. The atmosphere at Anfield didn’t affect me. I’m used to playing in big games with high intensity,” expressed the goalkeeper to MUTV.

Having previously experienced Anfield with Ajax during a Champions League encounter in December 2020, where an error led to a goal by Curtis Jones, Onana’s recent visit with United saw him emphasize the club’s ambition to win consistently, irrespective of opponents.

Acknowledging United’s underdog status following their recent defeat to AFC Bournemouth, the 27-year-old lauded the team’s resilience but stressed the need for higher standards.

“As Manchester United, one of the world’s biggest clubs, we aim to win against any opponent. Today, we secured a point, displayed collective effort and character, but it falls short,” Onana remarked.

Emphasizing the club’s relentless pursuit of victory, Onana reiterated,

“Regardless of our opponents, our objective is to win. Today, we fell short of that objective. We must raise our standards to achieve victory consistently.”
