Anambra State house passes secret cult prohibition bill

The Anambra State House of Assembly has taken a significant step in curbing crime and enhancing security by passing the Anambra State Secret Cult and Similar Activities Prohibition Bill 2024. This legislative move aims to prohibit secret cult activities and killings in the state.

The bill, titled the Anambra State Secret Cult and Similar Activities Prohibition Bill 2024, underwent thorough scrutiny during its third reading on Wednesday.

Led by Speaker Dr. Somtochukwu Udeze, lawmakers meticulously reviewed the executive bill during the Committee of the Whole House session. Following a comprehensive examination, the bill was unanimously passed by the assembly.

In a statement after the passage, Speaker Udeze remarked, “The passage of this bill underscores our commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of all residents of Anambra State.”

He emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts in tackling criminal activities and preserving peace and stability in the region.

The legislation includes provisions that presume participation in secret cult activities or possession of related items as membership. This empowers law enforcement agencies to take decisive actions against individuals involved in such activities.

Additionally, the bill authorizes the arrest of persons found in possession of offensive weapons, further strengthening law enforcement’s ability to maintain public safety.

The bill stipulates severe penalties for offenders, including life imprisonment or a minimum of 21 years without the option of a fine.

However, individuals who voluntarily renounce their membership in secret cults and surrender weapons will be exempt from prosecution. Instead, they will receive counselling and support through a newly established rehabilitation agency.

Ikenna Ofodeme, the Majority Leader and representative of Ekwusigo Constituency hailed the passage of the bill as a significant milestone in the state’s efforts to combat crime and criminality. He emphasized that the legislation would not only save lives but also empower authorities to take proactive measures against perpetrators.

As the bill awaits Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s assent, it represents a crucial step forward in Anambra State’s ongoing commitment to promoting peace, security, and the rule of law. The assembly has adjourned plenary till Thursday, reflecting their dedication to addressing pressing issues and advancing legislative priorities.
