Alimosho General Hospital enters panic mode as 3 die in 5 days

Panic follows Alimosho General Hospital in Lagos as 3 medical officers fall dead within 5 days as a press release by the medical guild identified the medical practitioners as Dr.Otukoya, Dr. Aluko and Dr. Shuaib.

Dr. Shuaib reportedly became the third victim of the trio after passing on on Monday.

The medical guild, which issued the press release after convening emergency officer committee and expanded executive council meetings, revealed its concern that these untimely deaths may be linked to various chronic illnesses, potentially exacerbated by the extreme stress experienced by healthcare workers.

The statement, jointly signed by the guild’s chairman, Dr. Sa’eid Ahmad, and secretary, Dr. Moruf Awodun, highlighted the ongoing issue of brain drain in the medical field. They stressed that the increased workload on doctors who remain in the country, coupled with the negative consequences of a shortage of medical personnel, have been repeatedly brought to the attention of the employer.

*In response to these tragic events, the medical guild has issued several resolutions in its press release, including:

  1. A Three-Day Mourning Period: A three-day mourning period has been declared across the entire Lagos State Health System. During this period, all medical and dental practitioners employed by the Lagos State Government are expected to conduct themselves in a solemn manner to pay their respects to their departed colleagues.
  2. Alimosho General Hospital: Alimosho General Hospital, where all three late medical officers practiced, will reschedule all elective procedures during the mourning period. Only emergency cases will be attended to during this time. This decision has been made both in acknowledgment of the profound psychological impact on the surviving colleagues and as a mark of respect for the fallen medical heroes.
  3. 48-Hour Engagement Period: The Lagos State Government has been issued a 48-hour ultimatum to engage in meaningful discussions with the Medical Guild regarding all welfare matters affecting doctors in Lagos State. This follows a comprehensive position paper previously submitted to the Governor.*
