Alex Iwobi reacts to Super Eagles win at Old Trafford
After losing the AFCON to hosts, Ivory Coast in the final, the Super Eagles pair of Alex Iwobi and Calvin Bassey really needed a clear ledger to continue the season. And what better way than to get the second half of the season started for their club side, Fulham than against Manchester United?
The Nigerian international in what was a shock defeat to the Red Devils at Old Trafford, both combined to stun Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United to claim all 3-points away at the Theatre of Dreams.
Calvin Bassey had opened the scoring via a set piece strike that bounced to him to volley past Manchester United’s Andre Onana in the 65th minute. However, United’s Centre Back on the day, Harry Maguire brought the Red Devils level on score line from a reverse set piece situation to bring Manchester United back into the tie in the 87th minute.
It was looking like the routine comeback for the Red Devils at Old Trafford till Alex Iwobi via an assist from former Wolverhampton Wanderers’ forward, Adama Traore netted the winner in the 97th minute to stun Manchester United with their first defeat of the year, and their 8th at Old Trafford in the current campaign.
Following a 2-1 defeat at the AFCON to the Ivorians, a clear shoulder rests on the Super Eagles pair whose dreams of helping their club side to victory eventually came true at the Theatre of Dreams.
The Super Eagles may have lost the AFCON, but they won it for Fulham at Old Trafford when the Cottagers most needed the 3-points.
Expressing his elation after the game, Iwobi told the club’s official website,
“I’m over the moon right now. To win at Old Trafford in the last minute is crazy, there’s no better feeling.”
Reflecting on his winning goal, Iwobi shared,
“As soon as I cut inside, I felt like the keeper was going to be in the far corner, so I gave him the eyes and it went in.”
He further added, “I haven’t seen his reaction, but everyone said he couldn’t move, so a goal is a goal. I’ll take it and move on to the next.”
