Air Peace Lagos to Abuja flights hit N200,000 by Nov 1

Starting November 1, 2024, a one-way flight ticket from Lagos to Abuja on Air Peace will cost passengers a steep N200,000, marking a new high in domestic airfare amid Nigeria‘s worsening economic challenges.

The aviation sector has been hit hard by the harsh economy, leading to increased operational costs and surging ticket prices, much to the frustration of passengers. The steep price hike has already prompted many travellers to abandon air travel in favour of road transport.

A review of airfares by our correspondent on Monday revealed that Air Peace’s N200,000 fare is the highest among domestic carriers, with others also increasing prices. Aero tickets now range from N94,000 to N109,000, Arik Air between N104,405 and N139,292, and Ibom Air between N124,000 and N133,000.

The impact of these rising fares is particularly severe on Nigeria’s busiest routes, Lagos-Abuja and Abuja-Lagos, with many passengers stranded at airports, unable to secure affordable seats. An official from Air Peace, who requested anonymity, confirmed the fare hike, citing the overwhelming economic burden on the airline industry.

“If you check the breakdown of our ticket prices, it’s clear that airlines are struggling. The taxes we pay are stifling, and we’ve been left with no choice but to increase fares to stay afloat,” the official explained.

Attempts to reach Air Peace’s Chief Operating Officer, Toyin Olajide, were unsuccessful as she did not respond to calls or text messages.

Businessman Adeleke Aina, a frequent air traveller, expressed his frustration, noting that the continuous spike in fares has left him considering road transport. “With airfares skyrocketing, I have no choice but to switch to road travel. The government seems indifferent to how bad things are getting,” he lamented.

The escalating ticket prices reflect the broader economic struggles facing both businesses and consumers, with no immediate relief in sight.
