Africa concedes defeat in FIFA Women’s World Cup

The FIFA Women’s World Cup had everything going for Africa with the women teams coming out with quite the showpiece to get into the next round of the tournament, however, one by one, they crumbled just before they could cross the finish line.

Morocco becomes the last African team to exit the FIFA Women’s World Cup following a 4-0 humiliation to a French side boasting of quality all round in Tuesday’s affair.

Their exit sees them follow the likes of the Nigeria Super Falcons and South Africa who were the only 3 continental representatives to qualify into the round of 16 knockout stages.

The Atlas Lionesses despite their quality as proven in the group stages, repeated similar errors that followed them in the game against Germany that saw them concede 6 goals in the opening fixture.

Following a one-sided first half that had the France women running into a 3 goal lead in 24 minutes at  the Hindmarsh Stadium, Morocco returned a better side in the second half but failed to put any pressure on the French team.

The 3-0 first half affair started with the French team bursting out of the blocks as early as 15 minutes  through Kadidiatou Diani, before Kenza Dali’s clinical finish into the far post five minutes later doubled whatever woes the African side were to encounter in the game.

Eugenie Le Sommer made it 3-0 for Herve Renard’s ladies by the 23rd minute with the halftime whistle coming as a needed relief for Morocco.

Morocco returned for the second half a much more improved side than they were in the first half but boasted little in attacking threat.

Morocco’s first foray in attack came 4 minutes into the second half when Ibtissam Jraidi broke loose, forcing Peyraud-Magnin to rush off her goal area to thwart danger.

However whatever hopes of overturning the 3 goal deficits came crashing when Le Sommer scored the 4th to deal a brace against the North African side.

This game is in contrast to prior games featuring African sides in the round of 16 stage that has seen African teams prove quite the challenge against their respective opponents in the tie. Be that as it may, all African sides bow out of the FIFA Women’s World Cup campaign.
