Adamawa Lawmaker Goes for Electric Bicycle Amid High Petrol Prices

In a gesture of solidarity with the masses grappling with the increased cost of petrol, Haruna Jilantikiri, a member of the Adamawa State House of Assembly, has opted to use an electric bicycle instead of a car.

The lawmaker’s decision to embrace alternative transportation was witnessed on Thursday, June 1, as he rode his electric bicycle to the state assembly, according to SaharaReporters.

The move comes in response to the skyrocketing price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol, which has surged following the removal of subsidy.

In Adamawa State, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) currently sells petrol at a rate of N550 per litre.

This recent development has caused immense financial strain on the public, prompting Jilantikiri to make a symbolic statement through his choice of transportation.

Representing the Madagali State Constituency, Jilantikiri expressed his concern over the exorbitant petrol prices and the hardships it imposes on the Nigerian people.

By opting for an electric bicycle to conduct his daily activities, the lawmaker aims to show solidarity with the masses and draw attention to the urgent need for the Nigerian government to address the issue.

The legislator, who is also the Chief Whip of the state House of Assembly lamented that “the product is currently being sold at the sum of N550 to N700 per litre at filling stations including that of the government, I do not think that Nigerians can afford it”.

“We are supposed to pack our cars and use bicycles to identify with the electorate because I don’t think they can afford to drive cars or ride motorcycles any longer,” Jilantikiri added.

The lawmaker also called on the Nigerian government to urgently address the issue and take measures to alleviate the burden faced by the public as a result of the fuel price hike.

His appeal highlights the need for prompt action to mitigate the adverse effects of rising petrol prices on the daily lives of Nigerians.
