Abuja, Lagos airports resumes international flights September 5

Hadi Sirika, The minister of Aviation confirms the resumption of international flights in the Abuja and Lagos airports on the 5th of September 2020.

Nigeria shut its airspace to international travel on March 23, 2020, to contain the spread of COVID-19.

The Nnamdi Azikwe International Airport, Abuja, and Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos, are the two airports allowed to resume international flight operations in Nigeria as from September 5, 2020.

Taking to Twitter to make the announcement, the Minister wrote;

“I am very glad to announce the reopening of Abuja and Lagos airports for international flights for the 5th of September, 2020. We remain grateful for your understanding and patience towards our collective safety.”

The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) had earlier confirmed the resumption of flights in the two airports.

NCAA made this known in a letter with ref NCAA/DG/AIR/11/16/255 to all aviation stakeholders and foreign airlines operating in Nigeria.

The letter signed by the Director-General of the NCAA, Captain Musa Nuhu, stated that other airports would be gradually reopened, stressing, however, that the two would have to adhere to existing COVID-19 protocols for approvals.

The letter reads,

“Other international airports namely Mallam Aminu International Airport, Kano (DNKN), Port Harcourt International Airport, Omagwa (DNPO), and Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu (DNEN), will remain closed to international flights until a new date is determined and announced.”
