Abia university fires sex-for-grades lecturer, Michael Ukaegbu

The management of Abia State University, Uturu, has sacked a senior lecturer and former Acting Head of the Department of Mass Communication, Michael Ukaegbu following his alleged involvement in a sex-for-grades scandal.
Ukaegbu’s sack was conveyed in a communique issued after the 148th regular and resumed meetings of the Governing Council of the university held on Thursday, the 16th and the 20th of December 2021, under the chairmanship of the Pro-Chancellor, Adolphus Wabara.
The university Registrar, Acho Elendu also disclosed that the Council also ratified the dismissal of another, Mr Leonard Chukwuma for alleged admission fraud and racketeering.
For some years now, the BBC Africa Eye has put a spotlight on sexual harassment taking place in tertiary institutions both in Ghana and Lagos. In the Sex for Grades investigations which focuses on university lecturers harassing female students, pressuring them for sex in return for grades or admission, a scandal that’s gone on for decades.
Abia State University is one of the state owned universities in Nigeria. These state academic institutions were created to expand admissions and bring professional skills, expertise and modern research facilities close to the city and rural dwellers, and have helped talented students to obtain higher education
