A Criminal recruited as a Police Officer — Kano Police defends
The Kano Police Command has categorically denied recent media reports suggesting that it recruited a well-known criminal in the state, Nasiru Abdullahi, into its ranks.
Addressing the press during a conference held in Kano on Tuesday, the Kano State Commissioner of Police, Usaini Gumel, vehemently refuted the allegations of recruiting criminals into the force, deeming such reports as false, malicious, and an orchestrated effort to tarnish the reputation of the state police command.
Commissioner Gumel clarified that Nasiru Abdullahi is one of the 222 influential youths in Kano who have received amnesty from the state government.
Out of this group, 50 individuals voluntarily offered their services as constables to assist the police in combating crime and criminal activities, and Abdullahi is among those who made this commitment.
He remarked,
“Following the directive of the state Governor, Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf, the repentant influential youths, who were previously involved with disgruntled politicians and other adversaries of the state, were thoroughly profiled and rehabilitated.”
Commissioner Gumel also highlighted that Sahara Reporters, a media outlet that reported the alleged recruitment, lacks a correspondent or reporter stationed in Kano, raising questions about the source of such misleading information.
He expressed his surprise at the circulation of what he described as “fake news.”
Furthermore, Gumel emphasized that subsequent investigations have confirmed that Nasiru Abdullahi has no criminal records in any court of law and issued a challenge to anyone seeking to verify this fact.
He stated,
“It is regrettable that some individuals are intent on tarnishing the image and reputation of the Nigerian Police, but they will not succeed.
“The Command remains unwavering in its commitment to safeguarding the lives and property of citizens.
“We urge the public to disregard such reports and maintain their trust in the dedication of the Kano State Police Command to protect lives and property within the state.”
