President Tinubu leads key council of state meeting in Abuja

President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday presided over the inaugural meeting of the Council of State at the Council Chambers of the Aso Rock Villa, Abuja. The high-profile gathering saw the attendance of former Presidents Goodluck Jonathan and Muhammadu Buhari, alongside former Heads of State, General Yakubu Gowon (retd.) and General Abdulsalami Abubakar (retd.), who joined virtually.

The meeting, which commenced at 12:35 pm with the national anthem and pledge, comes 18 months after the council last convened on February 10, 2023, under former President Buhari.

At that time, discussions centred on the 2023 elections, challenges from the new naira policy, and fuel scarcity.

Tuesday’s session is set to tackle pressing national matters, including the aftermath of recent #EndBadGovernance protests, the state of the economy, food security, and national security concerns.

Sources privy to the meeting’s agenda revealed that seven key issues are slated for discussion:

  1. Nationwide Protest and Its Impact on National Security

  4. Consolidating Gains in the Solid Minerals Sector
  5. Renewed Hope in Budgeting and Planning for Sustained Development
  6. Renewed Hope in the Road Sector
  7. Building a Strong Industrial Base for Transformation and Growth

While President Tinubu is listed to make presentations on these topics, insider information indicates that relevant ministers will brief the Council on his behalf. The National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, is expected to address the nationwide protests’ implications on security.

Other presentations include insights from Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Abubakar Bagudu; Minister of Works, David Umahi; and Minister of Industry, Trade, and Investment, Dr. Dorris Uzoka-Anite.

Despite not being formal members of the Council, these ministers will make brief appearances to provide their reports.
