Japa: President Tinubu approves health workforce migration policy

President Bola Tinubu has approved the National Policy on Health Workforce Migration, a significant move to tackle the pressing challenges facing Nigeria’s healthcare sector.

The health workforce migration policy is designed to address the ongoing exodus of healthcare professionals, manage health worker migration, and improve the overall working conditions for health workers in the country.

Announcing the approval on Monday, Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Pate, highlighted that this policy represents more than just a response to the brain drain but is a comprehensive strategy to retain talent and enhance Nigeria’s healthcare system.

The policy includes provisions for better working conditions, integration of advanced health technologies, and the reintegration of Nigerian health professionals from the diaspora.

Key features of the policy include the Nigeria Human Health Resource Programme, which will regularly review working conditions and promote digital health infrastructure like electronic medical records and telehealth services. The policy also aims to create a supportive work environment with measures for routine health checks, mental well-being, and fair working hours.

The National Human Resources for Health Programme will oversee the policy’s governance in collaboration with state governments, ensuring its effective implementation and alignment with broader health objectives.
