Flying Russian flags in Nigeria: Treasonable offense — CDS

Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa stated that flying the Russian flags in Nigeria constitutes a treasonable offence.

Speaking after an emergency security meeting with President Bola Tinubu at Aso Rock, General Musa vowed that the law would catch up with those responsible for flying the Russian flags in Nigeria.

Addressing calls for a coup, Musa emphasized that the military supports democracy and will not tolerate any attempts to change the government.

“We briefed the President on the current situation, and since the riots began, all security agencies have been working together. Initially, the protests were peaceful, but it’s now clear that some individuals are exploiting the situation to cause chaos, including looting and criminal activities.

“We’ve also witnessed foreign flags being flown within Nigeria’s sovereignty, which is completely unacceptable. This is a treasonable offence, and we will treat it as such. No one should allow themselves to be used by others for such actions.

“Regarding the issue of coups, Nigeria is a sovereign, democratic nation. All security agencies are committed to defending democracy. We will not tolerate any actions that threaten our democratic system.

“Many of those flying foreign flags are young people being manipulated. We are tracking those behind this and will take serious action. The President has instructed us to ensure peace and stability in Nigeria, and we stand united to uphold this mandate.

“The military will intervene if the situation escalates. Supervising individuals to carry foreign flags within Nigeria’s borders crosses a red line. Those responsible will face prosecution,” General Musa concluded.
