1st of August: Wike makes hasty moves to stall nationwide protests

In a hasty move to stall the upcoming 1st of August nationwide protests, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike has taken proactive steps to engage and mobilize Abuja youths against the August 1 to 10 demonstrations over hunger and hardship.

During a recent ministerial engagement with FCT youths from Abuja South Federal Constituency in Kwali Area Council, Wike emphasized the negative impacts of the potential 1st of August protests and why the youth should steer clear. He announced similar interactions would follow in Bwari and Gwagwalada Area Councils.

Addressing stakeholders in the Abuja Municipal Area Council, Wike highlighted the purpose of these interactions: to enlighten the community about the potential harm of protests and to promote constructive dialogue instead.

“There is no need for the protest. The current administration is barely one year in office and not enough to assess its performance. You can’t judge leadership within one year,” Wike asserted. He urged the community to appreciate the progress made in education, health, and security sectors, stressing the importance of patience and continued support for ongoing efforts.

Wike praised traditional rulers and area council chairmen for their role in mobilizing the youths, acknowledging their efforts in fostering peace and understanding. He also commended the security agencies for their improved performance, urging residents to support and encourage their efforts.

“Given the current developments in the FCT, what we need is peace, not protest. We want peace in the FCT and so, we cannot fold our hands and allow it to be destroyed in the guise of protest,” Wike stated.
