Gaza: "I won't stay silent anymore" -- Kamala Harris to Netanyahu

Vice President Kamala Harris starting to act presidentially as the days close in.

In a decisive move, the United States’ Vice President Kamala Harris urged Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday to broker a Gaza ceasefire, aiming to alleviate the severe humanitarian crisis plaguing Palestinian civilians.

Harris, poised to be the Democratic presidential nominee following President Joe Biden’s exit from the race, emphasized the urgency of ending the conflict during a televised statement after their face-to-face talks.

“It is time for this war to end,” Kamala Harris declared, highlighting the dire situation in Gaza after nine months of relentless fighting between Israel and Hamas militants. “We cannot allow ourselves to be numb to the suffering and I will not be silent.”

Harris’ firm and somber remarks have sparked speculation about whether her potential presidency would bring a more assertive approach towards Netanyahu. Despite this, analysts predict no significant deviation in U.S. policy towards Israel, a steadfast ally in the Middle East.

The conflict, ignited on October 7 by a Hamas attack on southern Israel resulting in 1,200 deaths and over 250 hostages, has led to a devastating Israeli counterattack. Over 39,000 people in Gaza have perished, with the region facing massive destruction, widespread displacement, famine, and acute shortages of emergency aid.

Earlier, President Biden met with Netanyahu, urging him to bridge gaps to achieve a ceasefire and facilitate aid flow, as per a White House readout. However, Harris’ more assertive tone underscores the growing impatience and demand for action amidst the escalating humanitarian disaster.
