Police suspend e-CMR for public education

In a move to enhance the security of lives and property, the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), under the leadership of Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, is set to enforce the digitalized Central Motor Registry (e-CMR) starting July 29, 2024. This initiative aims to modernize and streamline the motor vehicle registration system, significantly boosting the nation’s safety and security framework.

The e-CMR is an advanced, real-time online repository of motor vehicle data designed to support police investigations and combat vehicle-related crimes, including terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and armed robbery. This transition to a digitalized system will simplify the documentation and verification processes for vehicle ownership and related transactions.

Following the directives of the IGP, services such as change of ownership, license number, engine, and chassis/body will become more seamless.

The digitalized Central Motor Registry (e-CMR) system will ensure the validation of vehicle genuineness and ownership, enhancing the ability to track and recover stolen vehicles effectively and preventing the purchase of stolen vehicles by innocent buyers.

To prepare for enforcement, the IGP has mandated full publicity of the e-CMR and its procedures to inform the public about the requirements and processes. Members of the public are urged to obtain the digitalized CMR certificate online at e-CMR Portal. For further inquiries, individuals can contact the CMR Command Centre at FHQ Abuja (08117777666, 09169892000) and FHQ Annex Lagos (08117777555, 09169891000). Technical support is also available at cmrtech@npfcmr.ng.

The Nigeria Police Force seeks the understanding and support of all Nigerians and residents for this initiative. The enforcement of the e-CMR is crucial to creating a safer environment for vehicle ownership and significantly reducing vehicle theft. All vehicle owners and users are encouraged to embrace and promptly comply with this initiative for optimum safety and security.
