The Netherlands captain, Virgil van Dijk, expressed his frustration after the final whistle, revealing that referee Felix Zwayer’s actions added to the discontent. “The referee ran back inside straight after the FT whistle, that says a lot,” van Dijk stated, highlighting the perceived injustice the Dutch felt throughout the game.

The match had a dramatic start, with Xavi Simons putting the Netherlands ahead with a stunning strike in the seventh minute.
