Netherlands captain and Liverpool defender, Virgil van Dijk was all with the rage after Netherlands elimination from the Euro 2024 semi-final on Wednesday and his post-match interview may hold hidden meanings than mere words.

“Why we were beaten like that” — Liverpool captain, Virgil van Dijk

The Netherlands captain, Virgil van Dijk, expressed his frustration after the final whistle, revealing that referee Felix Zwayer’s actions added to the discontent. “The referee ran back inside straight after the FT whistle, that says a lot,” van Dijk stated, highlighting the perceived injustice the Dutch felt throughout the game.

The match had a dramatic start, with Xavi Simons putting the Netherlands ahead with a stunning strike in the seventh minute.

England, however, equalized with a penalty that many deemed controversial. The decision to award the penalty sparked outrage among the Dutch players and fans, further amplified by Zwayer’s reluctance to grant a corner following a deflection off John Stones.

Virgil van Dijk, visibly distraught, lamented the late concession that shattered their Euro dreams. “I have no words. To concede so late, that is terrible. This hurts so much. I have to stand here, but I don’t even know what to say,” he admitted.

Adding fuel to the fire, former Dutch footballer Pierre van Hooijdonk voiced his criticism on NOS, calling for Zwayer to face consequences.

“Felix Zwayer, put him on the black list. The penalty in the first half, the many moments in the second half, these moments have decided the final outcome of this game,” van Hooijdonk argued, emphasizing the impact of the referee’s decisions.
